Denise Chávez
Las Cruces, NM

 
A novelist, short story writer, playwright, actress, and teacher, Denise Chávez is a native of Las Cruces, New Mexico.  She is currently an Assistant Professor of Creative Writing at New Mexico State University, and she is founder and Artistic Director of the Border Book Festival, a major regional Book Festival based in Las Cruces.  She is the author of Face of an Angel (1994), which won the Premio Aztlán and the American Book Award.  Her novel, Loving Pedro Infante, will be published in April of 2001.  She also published The Last of the Menu Girls (1991), a collection of short stories, and The Woman Who Knew the Language of the Animals/ La Mujer Que Sabía El Idioma de Los Animales, a children’s play.  She has an MFA in Drama from Trinity University, and an MA in Creative Writing from the University of New Mexico.  Her one-woman show, Women in the State of Grace has toured throughout the United States.
