Alison Deming

Alison Hawthorne Deming was born and grew up in Connecticut.  She currently lives in Tucson, where she is Associate Professor in Creative Writing at the University of Arizona.  She is the author of Science and Other Poems (1994), which was selected for the Walt Whitman Award of the Academy of American Poets, and was listed among Bloomsbury Review’s Best Poetry books of the past fifteen years.  The Monarchs: A Poem Sequence was published in 1997, and a philosophical authobiography, Writing the Sacred into the Real, will be published in 2001.  She has published two other nonfiction books: Temporary Homelands (1994), and The Edges of the Civilized World (1998), which was a finalist for the PEN Center West Award.  Deming received an MFA from Vermont College in 1983 and held the Wallace Stegner Fellowship at Stanford University in 1987-1988.  Her writing was won many awards, fellowships, and residencies.
